Isola
Luciana
bilancia 94
In 2015, the Foundation acquired Isola Luciana Bilancia 94, the lake island with the smallest balance in the world.
The project was carried out in the Municipality of Massarosa, in the Bozzano district, in the locality known as La Cava, with the aim of creating a nature trail for birdwatching, accessible to everyone free of charge. The project included the construction of a temporary wooden observation structure, built using natural materials such as wood and reeds, with a wooden roof, waterproof membrane, and green panels.
Two wooden platforms were also built to allow visitors to move safely along the trail. Along the walkways, information panels describing the local flora and fauna have been installed, providing an educational experience for visitors.
Finally, a boat dock was constructed, with a walkway connecting the islet to the main trail, using materials similar to those of the other structures. The project aimed to safeguard and enhance the natural and historical area of Lake Massaciuccoli, thanks to collaboration with local organisations and associations dedicated to environmental protection.
The balances are undoubtedly the result of spontaneous folk art, as well as a concentration of cultural heritage, but in their original state they were not truly an expression of beauty. To restore the original beauty of Balance No. 94, the Foundation developed a restoration project and published a book, Le vecchie signore del lago, which documents the entire process, from the initial condition, through the date of acquisition, to its completion.
